The Colostrum Refractometer can be used to measure whether colostrum is of high enough quality.
This is a hand-held refractometer which is an inexpensive, reliable on-farm method to check if your colostrum is at a sufficient value – the new recommended value of >𝟐𝟓% Brix.
This is very important because colostrum is a vital essential for newborn calves as it contains antibodies called immunoglobulins (IgG) of. These are essential to build up the calf’s immune system, it also contains all the energy and nutrients which are essential for growth.

- Or measure TS values in milk to always get a stable mixing ratio.
- Refractometer should be kept free from any visual dirt
- Calibrate the Refractometer using distilled water before each use. If the scale does not read zero (i.e. at the bottom of the blue section) adjust using the calibration screw
- Hold the refractometer up to natural light while looking down the eye piece
- Always wipe the slide and glass surface clean with a clean soft cloth after a reading
